For nearly 80 years, UNESCO has understood that governments alone cannot guarantee lasting peace. That’s why it has been at the forefront of promoting peace through education, dialogue and mutual understanding.
Like Rotary, UNESCO knows lasting peace requires connections and solidarity among people at all levels of society.
At Rotary, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.
This daylong conference, chaired by Rotary International President Gordon R. McInally, will focus on the following themes:
- Greening Education for Peace and the Planet
- Inclusive and equitable education

- Education for Peace
- Polio eradication

To respond to the global climate and environmental crisis, education must be transformed to prepare every learner with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes needed to combat climate change and promote sustainable development.
Education is a fundamental human right that has the power to transform our societies and is the cornerstone of peace and sustainable development. In partnership with local stakeholders, our members support projects that strengthen basic education and teachers’ professional development. To respond to the global climate and environmental crisis, education must be transformed to equip every learner with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes needed to combat climate change and promote sustainable development.
Education technology has increased opportunities for teaching and learning for students across the globe. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many countries pivoted to technology tools to continue learning. Despite the proliferation of different technologies, there’s growing debate over how and what technology tools can support teachers and improve learning outcomes for all students.
UNESCO was founded in 1945 to build peace through international cooperation following two devastating wars in less than a generation. Scarred nations believed that economic and political agreements alone could not bring lasting peace and that lasting peace had to be based on the spiritual and moral solidarity of humanity.
The Rotary Positive Peace Activator Program provides selected individuals the opportunity to gain concrete knowledge & resources to foster peace and access to a global network of likeminded peacebuilders.
Serving as a Rotary Positive Peace Activator is a unique opportunity to be part of a larger movement to help build peace at local, community levels, working in partnership with Rotary members, Rotary International, and the Institute for Economics & Peace
Polio eradication is one of Rotary's oldest and most important efforts. With our partners, we have immunized more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. We've reduced the number of polio cases worldwide by 99.9 percent, and we won't stop until polio is eradicated. During the conference, the Polio Eradication Champion Award will be presented to H.E. Emmanuel Macron, President of the Republic of France. The award recognizes world leaders who have made significant contributions toward the goal of polio eradication. It is aimed at heads of state and government, as well as senior health and development officials.
After these reflections and debates, everyone will be able to go back to their clubs, full of inspiration to change the world of tomorrow!
